“The forest is the root of all life; it is the womb that revives our biological instincts, that deepens our intelligence and increases our sensitivity as human beings.”
-Akira Miyawaki
DEVELOPER OF THE MIYAWAKI METHOD OF FOREST CREATION
Forest Lab is an experiential teaching and learning center focused on helping humans develop eco-attachment through place-based experiences in nature that foster the proper intuitions of relatedness. Located about 45 minutes north of the Golden Gate bridge, near Nicasio, California, our ten acre eco-reserve is the Hearth Science global headquarters.
Our ethics, aesthetics, and architectural plans unfold within this ethos. Our work is post-capitalist and multi-cultural. We view Small Band Hunter Gatherers as the baseline of human normalcy. The site houses our film studio, a teahouse, a small meditation studio, and several outdoor classrooms.
We host periodic retreats, workshops, and gatherings, including forest bathing (shinrin-yoku). We occasionally rent the land to mission-aligned organizations seeking a unique setting for small group activities, and we also rent out our open-walled film studio.
